The development of robotics in India can be traced back to the early 1980s, when the first Indian robot, the TIFR robot, was developed at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai. RASI was established as a professional society to promote the development & use of robotics & automation technologies in India. The society has played a key role in promoting robotics education & research in India, & has organized several national & international conferences & workshops on robotics.

These centers have played a key role in developing indigenous robotics technologies & nurturing talent in the field of robotics. Some of the prominent robotics research centers in India include the Robotics Research Center at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the Robotics Research Group at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, & the Robotics Laboratory at the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Hyderabad.
