1000 drones will take to the skies in the capital

The Republic Day celebrations will be made more spectacular using 1000 drones. The capital will be lit up with these drones on January 29. A start-up by the name Botlab Dynamics Private Limited is incubated at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The drone show will be 10 minutes long in duration and will showcase government achievements through many creative formations in the night sky.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh said that drone technology has come a long way in India. It is being used for things like delivering vaccines to difficult areas to lighting up the Rajpath during Beating the Retreat Ceremony. He said that India will be the 4th country after China, Russia & UK to carry out such a large-scale show with 1000 drones.

Botlab, in association with the Ministry of Defence has conceptualized the ‘Drone Show’ to commemorate the 75th year of Independence. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the project has been developed within the country, including both hardware and software such as the flight controller; precision GPS; motor controller; Ground Control Station (GCS) algorithms etc.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently declared 16 January as the National Start-up Day on the occasion of Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Botlab Dynamics Private Limited was financially supported, for the project “Design and Development of a Reconfigurable Swarming System Consisting of 500-1000 Drones for 3D Choreographed Drone Light Shows”.

Rajesh Kumar Pathak, IP&TAFS, Secretary, TDB stated that, “Botlab is one of such unique Start-ups, which will play a significant role in taking the drone manufacturing sector to new levels. We are proud to support such company, which will make a unique contribution to this special occasion of Amrit Mahotsav”.

About BotLab Dynamics

BotLab Dynamics has built technology that allows many drones to fly simultaneously and autonomously in interesting spatial and temporal formations. BotLab is a startup incubated at IIT Delhi incubation facility, TBIU ( Technology Business Incubator). Two focus areas for commercialization of the technology are Media & Entrainment for drone lights shows and in defence. The technology is built from scratch by BotLab. The goal of the BotLab is to fly thousands of drones simultaneously operated by a single user. Our mission is to be part of the ecosystem that makes building hardware easy in India.

We are building drone technology solutions by designing both hardware and software in-house. Our team has developed full stack of solutions for drone light shows. Current fleet size is 100 drones capable of any custom formation.

Building a complete system as is hard and making several copies with identical performance is even harder. Making all the drones position themselves precisely so that a viewer can identify a form is a huge challenge. What we have developed is capable of scaling it to thousand of drones flying in detailed vivid imagery.

Humble Beginnings

In early 2012, Tanmay Bhunkar (Co-founder BotLab Dynamics) took his first UAV flight and by 2014, he and his team were asked to deliver 8 drones that would join the Delhi Police. This reaffirmed the faith in drone technology and its future in India. In 2016, BotLab Dynamics was incorporated at the Technology Business Incubator Unit at IIT Delhi. In the same year, BotLab Dynamics sold heavy-lift systems to IARI (Indian Agriculture Research Institute)

First Funding
  1. In 2017, BotLab Dynamics was awarded Nidhi – SSS (DST, Govt of India) of 50 Lakh Rupees. This paved the way for future research and development.
  2. In 2018, BotLab Dynamics got selected by Army Design Beuro (ADB) to demo the heavy lift drone in Tawang Arunachal Pradesh.
Swarm Development
  • In 2019, BotLab Dynamics demonstrated a swarm of ten drones to the Army Chief in AirTech
  • Also got selected in M-prize by Indian Air Force for swarming of 10 drones with 1Kg payload /5km range/auto-detection of the target.
  • Also demonstrated a swarm of 10 drones with obstacle avoidance capability to Army at NorTech, Udhampur,
  • Were awarded the Prime Minister’s award & iDEX grant of Rs. 1.5 crore for R&D.
