In all, 15 countries are expected to send their teams for the top robotic competition in the region, where the best young engineering brains will vie for the top spots. Cambodia, being the host country, will have two teams at the competition, Pang Chamnan, Robocon Cambodia Director of National Television of Cambodia (TVK).
The event, to be organised by the Ministry of Information through TVK, a member of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), will be held at the Indoor Sport Center of Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.
The ABU Robocon 2023 Organising Committee also held its first meeting, chaired by Khim Vuthy, Director General of TVK, yesterday and discussed the arrangements to be made for the event. The meeting divided the work tasks for the various sub-committees.
The annual competition, during which a pair of robots are required to complete a task within a set period of time, is aimed to advance engineering and broadcasting technologies in the region as well as to foster friendship among young people with similar interests.
‘Casting flowers over Angkor Wat’ and ‘throwing rings into poles’ will be the themes of the competition for this year, said Chamnan. The two Cambodian teams will be selected on the basis of a national contest to be held in June, he added.
“We will also organise an outreach campaign from May to promote the event which also holds tourism potential as fans of the teams from various countries are also expected,” Chamnan said.
Previous Robocon Events
Cambodia has participated in the ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest since 2017 and the Kingdom won the Best Idea Award and special award in 2017, 2nd runner-up and special award in 2018, and 5th award and special award in 2020. Cambodia, represented by students from Cambodia Academy of Digital Technology (CADT) won the special Toyota Award at the competition held in New Delhi, India, last year.
Last year, Hong Kong was the winner of the Grand Prix of the ABU Robocon 2022 followed by Indonesia as the first runner-up, and India and Nepal as the second runners-up.
The hosting of the event will give an opportunity to Cambodia to display the potential of its human resources in robotics as well as to showcase its culture and tradition.
According to ABU Robocon, the competition, launched in 2002, has been providing an international stage for engineering students in the Asia-Pacific region to showcase their robot-building skills, and build lasting friendships in the process.
