Solar Defence and Aerospace Launches Robotics & UAV Facility in Nagpur

Expanding India’s Defence Manufacturing Capabilities

Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited, has officially started construction on a cutting-edge robotics and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturing facility at the MIHAN Special Economic Zone in Nagpur. This project marks a significant step in the company’s expansion into advanced defence technologies, autonomous systems, and robotics manufacturing, strengthening India’s strategic defence capabilities.

Solar Industries India Limited is a leading manufacturer of industrial explosives and defence products, serving mining, infrastructure, and defence sectors. Through its subsidiary, the company is venturing into high-tech defence manufacturing with a focus on UAV technologies, advanced ammunition, and strategic defence systems.

Focus on UAVs and Robotics

The Nagpur facility will specialize in the design, development, and production of unmanned aerial vehicles and robotics platforms for defence applications. Once fully operational, it is expected to produce up to 10,000 UAVs annually with operational ranges of 15 km to 1,000 km, meeting defence and surveillance requirements.

Additionally, around 1,000 advanced robotic systems are planned for production annually. The first prototype robot is expected within one year of the development phase.

Major Investment in Emerging Defence Technologies

Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited plans to invest over ₹12,800 crore in initiatives involving UAVs, robotics, and long-range missile systems. This investment will be implemented over the next three to four years for specific projects, while the broader development strategy is expected to unfold over a 10-year horizon.

The initiative aligns with the Maharashtra government’s Mega Project and Thrust Policy, which encourages large-scale industrial and technological investments in the state.

Integration of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies

The facility will employ AI-driven production processes, intelligent automation, and human-centric manufacturing systems, embodying the principles of Industry 5.0. The initial phase will focus on producing AI-enabled UAVs and medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) drones suitable for both defence and commercial use.

The facility will also manufacture specialized electronic components and assemblies essential for advanced aerospace systems, contributing to India’s technological self-reliance.

Dual-Use Technology Applications

Beyond defence applications, Solar Defence and Aerospace is exploring potential uses of its technologies in civilian, industrial, and dual-use sectors. By integrating robotics, AI, and autonomous systems, the company aims to support industrial automation, public safety, disaster management, and other next-generation technology solutions.

Strategic Importance

The Nagpur project emphasizes India’s commitment to indigenous defence manufacturing and technological self-reliance. By producing cutting-edge UAVs, robotics platforms, and aerospace systems, Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited is strengthening national security while creating a technology-driven industrial ecosystem that promotes economic growth and employment in the region.
