IIT Bombay Racing wins at Formula Student UK 21 concept class
IIT Bombay Racing wins at Formula Student UK 21 concept class. “ This season at Formula Student UK has been very special to us; we have been crowned the overall winner (overall 1 st position) in the concept class category, the first Indian Formula Student team to win any International Formula Student Competition. The concept class has three independent events based on which a team is judged”. Team member told to Robotics India.
“The students at IIT Bombay Racing are proud to announce that we have hit a significant milestone on our road to progress. The team has put in our best result yet, at the Formula Student UK competition, hosted by IMechE. This year, the competition was held in two modes, one for the teams that could go and participate in the UK and the other called concept class for the teams who couldn’t travel because of the constraints due to covid. IIT Bombay Racing participated in the concept class along with 65 other teams from 18 countries”. team iit Bombay Racing.
Competition Event | position | Points |
Engineering design | 1st | 141/160 |
Business Plan Presentation | 4th (of 96 teams, event common to all classes) | 103/120 |
Cost and Manufacturing | 10th | 105/150 |
The previous season we were the first Indian FS team to win the Engineering design event and this the season we defended our title. IIT Bombay Racing has also secured 2nd place with 234 points in the Lap Time Simulation, a new category introduced this year and the best acceleration mention for covering 75 meters in 4.127s.
Amid these difficult times, securing the leading position and setting new records was a great achievement and much-needed morale boost for the entire team. This was possible because of the efforts from each and every teammate and constant support from our sponsors NRB Bearings, MAHLE, IIT Bombay, and our alumnus despite the challenging circumstances.
Team is looking forward to competing in FSUK 2022 at Silverstone next year, where our sights will be fixated on a podium finish. We hope to replicate the same result in dynamic events too.

IIT Bombay Racing is an independent self-sustained student organization of 80+ Undergraduate students from IIT Bombay. We at IIT Bombay Racing build India’s fastest student-built race car year after year. We are pioneers in engineering high-performance electric race cars to compete at various Formula Student competitions like Formula Bharat and Formula Student UK, which is Europe’s most prominent educational engineering competition attended by over 10,000 people and 110+ teams from all over the world and is also covered by the BBC network in the UK. Team Vision
Team Vision is to “revolutionize electric mobility in India, focusing on sustainable technologies and Innovations “. We believe in providing a platform for budding engineers to live their passion and, during that journey, grow into excellent engineers with immense technical knowledge and a practical approach to real-world problem-solving.
Some of our alumni have launched their initiatives in the automotive sector, like Ather and Karkhana. Sure others have joined the automotive industry, with well-established players, like Tesla Motors, etc.
Team’s Legacy
We have been building race cars since 2007. We started with Internal Combustion Engine cars, and in 2012 our seniors took up the challenge to build an electric race car as they predicted then that electric mobility was the future and the team should work towards it.
We are also a pioneer in some of the technologies like in house developed Battery Management system (BMS), Titanium 3D printed Uprights, full Aerodynamics Package which we have developed in-house by collaboratively working with Industries.

Plans for the coming season
IIT Bombay Racing plans to go driverless by 2024 and has already started working towards it. We have a a dedicated team of 12 Design Engineers supervised by a core team member working on various driverless technologies creating a map of the environment with the images captured from a camera using deep learning, control algorithms to navigate the vehicle through the detected environment. We are all set to move from a steel space frame chassis to a carbon-fiber based monocoque chassis this season.
Formula Student Competition
Formula Student (FS) is Europe’s most established educational engineering competition and celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2018. Backed by industry and high-profile engineers such as Patron, Ross Brawn OBE, the competition aims to develop enterprising and innovative young engineers and encourage more young people to pursue a career in engineering.
The project usually forms part of a degree-level project. It is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from university to the workplace. It is a kite-mark for real-world engineering experience, combining practical engineering experience with soft skills, including business and project management. Each year, Formula Student sees over 100 university teams from around the globe travel to Silverstone to compete in static and dynamic events that will test their preparation and hard work.

Formula Bharat
This is an Indian Formula Student-style engineering design competition in which students from colleges and universities all over the country compete with a formula-style vehicle in engineering design, overall cost, marketability, and dynamic performance.
During a five-day competition, a jury of experts from the motorsport, automotive, and supplier industries judge teams for a total of 1000 points with the same distribution as above shown in the design, cost, and business planning of all the teams to determine the best team and vehicle; in addition, the team’s on-track performance scores will demonstrate how well they hold up under real-life conditions.
