India’s scale, socio-economic diversity, and digital ambitions create both exceptional opportunities and distinctive challenges for AI adoption. AI in India carries with it both peril and possibility; it has the potential to deepen inequality and risk, as well as serve as an unprecedented engine of inclusion and innovation. In 2023, the Government of India took cognizance of the rapidly evolving AI landscape and committed to a future-focused, adaptive AI governance framework.

The India AI Governance Advisory Group

To address these needs, an Advisory Group was formed under the chairmanship of the Principal Scientific Advisor (PSA). The group tasked a Subcommittee with providing actionable recommendations for AI governance in India. Following extensive deliberations, the Subcommittee released a report outlining AI governance guidelines.

Public consultation generated over 2,500 submissions from government bodies, academic institutions, think tanks, industry associations, and other stakeholders. These suggestions informed the development of a more comprehensive governance framework.

Key Areas of the AI Governance Guidelines

4. Practical Guidelines:
   The guidelines provide sector-specific recommendations to encourage responsible AI practices, promote self-regulation, and ensure transparent oversight.
